It should not be said that there are various groups in Islam. Islam is only one group. There is no grouping in Islam. However there are different school of thoughts in Islam. The reason for the presence of these schools is that the Holy Book Quran guides the Muslims about the basic principles and obligations (refer to Islam five pillars for more information) without going into the small details.
Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad PBUH Sunna (sayings and practices) have outlined the basic procedures without the all details and thus giving Muslims a variety of opinions to choose from what they feel best suited for them. These are the details where Muslim scholars have different schools about. So, Muslims follow the teaching of scholars relating these minor details.The two major schools of thoughts are Ahl-e-Sunnat(Sunnis) or Ahl-e-tashiyu(shiites). These two schools have branched into further schools, as no two people can think the same way.
These details were so unimportant that for centuries after the death of Holy Prophet PBUH, Muslims had never worried about having different schools so far all of them do not deny the basic Islam faith.
It is important to emphasize that Both Sunnis and Shiites are Muslims. They both believe in one and only one God and believe in his prophet and Messenger Muhammad. They believe in Quran and in the five pillars of Islam. They pray facing the same direction (Kaaba). They may pray together in the same mosque and led by a Sunni or Shiite at no difference.

However, it is to be empasized that no dramatic differences betweem Sunnis and Shiites as observed in the different sects of other religions. All Islam groups agree upon the basic Islam fundamentals and differ only on side minor issues. Refer to question below.
