Fold mountains are created by uplift and folding of tectonic plates as they move towards each other and collide. This is known as a compressional plate margin. An example is the Andes Mountain range in South America(Nazca Plate colliding with the South American Plate).
Mountain ranges can also be formed from volcanoes and the eruption of lava. The mid-ocean ridge system forms the longest continuous mountain range on the planet. The ridges are formed of newly created buoyant crust which gradually sinks as it cools and becomes more dense while moving away from the divergent plate boundary.
