∙ 13y agoThe Ottoman Empire survived until WWI, when the Ottomans reluctantly entered the war on the side of the Central Powers (the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany) and were defeated. After the war the Empire was divided up, with largest portion becoming the country of Turkey. Under their modernizing new leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the country became a western-oriented secular Democracy.
