There are a few things you can teach them to do. I know you can teach them to talk (some never talk), you can teach them to ring a little bell on one of their bird toys, and sometimes you can get them to whistle. You can also possibly teach a parakeet to fly on to your finger, as this trick is most likely tough to teach. There are probably other things you can teach them too. I suggest you research for more info. Remember to only teach them one trick at a time, more than one (being worked on for a while), can confuse your parakeet.
My parakeet resists training, but i have seen parakeets that talk, ring bells, climb ladders, ''step up'', ''step down'', role a ball, and even play dead!!
God bless.

Training parakeets and other exotic birds requires much patience. Search Wiki Answers for what you're specifically trying to train the parakeet to do.
Well based on what I know Parakeets are pretty smart but depending on how old your Parakeet is can help you on its skill level in tricks. If you have a young Parakeet or a Parakeet with little to no trick knowledge start by giving it the basics or simple voice phrases.
Leave it in its cage for about a week to get used to the new surroundings. Then let it out for a fly. make sure you close all blinds and curtains as the parakeet can crash into the window and get a terminal injury.
A parakeet is a small parrot. The parakeet is cute."Feed me!" screamed the parakeet.

That parakeet is just resting. A parakeet has flown into the dining room.
A full grown parakeet is usually no more than six inches tall. Make sure not to confuse a parakeet wit a budgerigar (budgie for short), which looks very similar to a parakeet, but is not the same exact thing as a parakeet and are taller than the average parakeet.
