Depends on what color the smoke is. White, is water. Cracked head, or block, or blown head gasket. A cylinder leakdown test which tell you which. Black, is "rich," or too much fuel is being put into the motor. Probably a carb., issue. Blue is oil. Just on start up, or, only when it is revved, would say the valve guides/seals, are At Fault. Consistant blue smoke. The rings are gone.
