The earth orbits around the sun and if it didn't rotate as it does so we would have one day and one night per year, each lasting 6 months. The fact that the earth rotates once every 24 hours constantly presents a changing face to the sun, which is our source of light.

The Earth rotates about its own axis, so the side that faces the Sun changes. This is usually just called rotation. A full rotation takes approximately a day, but due to the fact that the Earth also moved relative to the Sun while it was rotating, the Earth has to rotate further than a full rotation in order for the Sun to appear to be in the same position in the sky again. This difference is about 3 minutes 56 seconds.

The spin of the earth dictates night and day because as it spins, only part of the earth can be exposed to the sun at a time. This is the effect that we know as night and day. During the night on one part of the earth, it is day on the other part, and vice versa. So, in reality, the sun doesn't "rise" or "set", but the earth gives it that impression.

The rotation of the Earth makes every part of it face the sun. Each part has its "turn". When it's not its "turn", it'll be darker or night time because the sun's not hitting that part of the Earth.

The angular momentum the earth gained as it was forming.

Because of the huge amount of mass involved the earth will retain it for eons. Though it is slowly dissipating and the rotation is slowing.
