It depended on the wealth of the family. Plantation children didn't do much around the house since they had slaves to do the jobs that children would do. In farm families the girls were expected to help in the house and the boys on the farm with the father. Children as young as 2 had chores to do like feeding chickens, or moving the cows to pasture. Within the house there was always things to be done. Butter to be churned, candles made, soap made, things to be mended, bread to make, crops to grow for the family, eggs to be collected, cows to milk, are just some of the things children were expected to help with as well as having a time each day to read The Bible and learn math.
