In high school you should take all of the core subjects, including math, science, english, physics, chemistry and Biology, as this will maximize the options you will have when you are ready to start university or college. This way, if you decide to pursue a career option other than chiropractic you will have the option. A solid science background in high school will allow you to begin a journey towards ANY profession once in university.

Then, before a student can attend a chiropractic college he/she must complete at least 3 years of an undergraduate university/college degree (eg: bachelor of science). Most students at chiropractic colleges have completed their undergraduate degree. A bachelor of science is the best option. Take courses in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology and you will be well prepared for chiropractic college. Students with other undergraduate degrees (eg: Bachelor of arts) are also eligible for chiropractic college, but will find it more challenging without significant background in any of the sciences.

Lastly, there is chiropractic college, which involves 4 years of intensive training. The first 3 years consist of courses in anatomy, physiology, radiology, radiography, nutrition, diagnosis, orthopedics, pathology, microbiology, immunology, toxicopharmacology, neuroscience, functional rehabilitation, biomechanics, ethics, techniques systems, etc.

Many of these courses require hands on learning, specialized instructors, access to cadavers (human bodies donated for medical training), and specialized equipment like X-ray machines, lab diagnosis equipment, treatment tables, physiotherapeutic modalities, exercise equipment, etc.

The last year of chiropractic college is a clinical residency, where the students treat patients in a hospital, rehab center, or clinic to gain experience under the guidance of licenced doctors of chiropractic.

What degree does a chiropractor need?

Yes. In the United States, in order to become a chiropractor, you must obtain a doctor of chiropractic degree. Australia, on the other hand, only licenses chiropractors on the masters level, and they are therefore not considered doctors.

Is a dc chiropractor different than a chiropractor?

This difference may indicate a slight difference in the education of the chiropractor. For example, in Canada and the US chiropractors complete a 4 year doctoral program (after an undergraduate degree) to get a doctorate in chiropractic (DC) degree. In Australia, chiropractors complete a 2 year masters degree (after an undergraduate degree) to get a masters in chiropractic. Thus, in Canada and the US, a chiropractor is a doctor and has a DC qualification, whereas in Australia a chiropractor is a therapist and has a masters degree not a DC.

Can a chiropractor legally work from a home office?

Yes, once a chiropractor has completed an undergraduate degree, a chiropractic degree, and passed all the board exams he/she is allowed to open a practice in whatever type of building they like. The restriction is that it must be within the jurisdiction of the regulatory college whose board exams they write. For example, in Canada, if a chiropractor passes the Canadian board exams and the ALberta board exams then they are licenced to practice anywhere they want in Alberta. If they choose to practice out of their home then that is OK.
