Grey wolves, as in the species, are also called "timber wolves", or just "wolves". They are the most commonly known wolves. Some names for a grey wolf character you are creating, as in the fur color grey, can be named Twig, Branch, Smoke, Boulder, and Dusty for males. Misty, Rain, Minnow, and Pebble work for females. Some mystic names for pretty much any wolf male include Apollo, Rune, Lobo, and Cobalt. Some options of mystic names for females include Echo, Tempest, Topaz, and Leto. Most of the names listed would work for unisex names, like Pebble, Smoke, Echo and Rune.

Grey and timber wolves grow to about 5-6 feet long.

A wolf pack is like a family. Each pack is led by one male and one female known as the alphas.

The wolf is a member of the dog family; this family also includes foxes, jackals and

coyotes.

Grey wolves can usually run for a few hours at 7-8 miles.

The Wolves' diet of choice consists of deer, moose, caribou, elk, bison, musk-oxen and beaver. They have been known to survive on voles and mice if need be.

Packs can have as little as 2 members or as many as 30 members. Average Pack size is 6 to 8.

Pack Territories vary with location. In the Alaskan or Canadian Wilderness the territory for one pack ranges from 300 to 1,000 square miles while in the continental U.S. the territory is between 25 and 150 square miles.

The height of an average Wolf is between 26 and 32 inches at the shoulder.

Where to start?

Gray wolves are the largest living wolf. They have an average shoulder height of 26-38 inches. From nose to base of the tail, 40-58 inches. And their average tail length is 13-20 inches.

Gray wolves live in northern regions. The north of North America, north of Europe and Asia.

Gray wolves communicate in many different ways. They howl to communicate at long distances, growl to pose a threat or state rights, whimper to show submission, and a quiet woof as either offensive or defensive.

Gray wolves have awesome senses. They can hear up to 10 miles away and hear high pitched sounds that humans can't. They smell up to a mile away. They can also smell something that was there three days ago. They can see better than a human at both night and day, but can see better at night. They can detect even the slightest movement, with their eyes, of something ten feet away. They can also see shapes and movement over long distances.

Gray wolves are super strong.

They have a crushing jaw pressure of 500 pounds per square inch. They can also run up to 40 miles per hour and are the world's best long-distance runner.

There's also some other stuff about wolves. They can only taste salty, sweet, bitter, and acidic. They have scent glands on the bottoms of their feet. At night their eyes glow because they take in any light and the backs of their eyes reflect it, which is related to their nocturnal vision. The glow, called eye shine, is greenish orange.

Grey wolves are unique creatures that generally live in the Northen Hemisphere in places such as Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Minnesota, Idaho and Montana. There are still some in the southern part of Alaska but they are slowly dying off. A full grown grey wolf is about 40-58 inches not including tail. The average weight of a grey wolf is between 60 and 100 pounds. Gray wolves are carnivores, preying on elk, caribou, and deer, as well as beavers, hares and other small animals. For hunting large animals, first the pack will howl, alerting other packs and warning them to stay away. Then the pack will slowly approach a herd of caribou, making sure they are downwind (or that the wind is blowing from the caribou to them and the caribou can't cath their scent on the wind.) Then they will seek out the youngest, weakest, or the oldest caribou among them. The alpha male will lead the chase, barking and yipping to scare them into a frenzy and chase them across the tundra. Slowly, the wolves will separate the chosen caribou, nipping at its hindquarters and pushing it away from the herd. Once it is separated they will chase the caribou to exhaustion while nipping and slashing at its legs and flanks. Eventually the caribou will fall or be weakened from loss of blood and exhaustion. The Alpha male usually makes the kill. He will pounce on the caribou, seeking out the jugular vein in its neck and bite down, killing it quickly. The wolves are separated in ranks, first the alpha male and the alpha female. Then the beta which is sort of the alpha male's second in command. Then the next wolf and the next wolf. The final wolf is called the Omega. He is picked on by all of the pack for being at the bottom. He also has to act as babysitter for all of the pups. All of the wolves will eat in order. Once they have eaten their fill the next wolf can eat. If there is no more food the Omega gets none. A wolf below another wolf may challenge the wolf above them. They will battle it out, to the death, or when one wolf gives in. The wolves live in packs of about 12 but fewer or more have been seen. After about two months of pregnancy a mother will give birth from one to eleven pups is born with an average of five or six. Grey wolves are endangered species because a long time ago humans were taking the grey wolves' land. The caribou was slowly dying off due to human hunting and loss of land. The wolves had nothing to eat. So they turned to human livestock. Humans began killing the wolves, not only because of lost livestock but also for sport. Since then wolves have been known as evil beasts of great cunning hence the stories of the Three Little Pigs or Red Riding Hood which all depict the wolf as terrible.
