There are several pieces of an addiction. It is a complex disease. One does not need have all of the criteria to have an addiction, but if someone has a few of them there is a high suspicion that addiction exists.

Tolerance - does it take more of a substance to get the same effect? For example: When someone first started drinking, they could get a "buzz" on the 2nd beer, but now it takes several beers to catch a buzz and even more to become intoxicated. Or, when someone first starts taking pain medication, it takes one or two pills to address the pain. At some point tolerance to the medication begins and one or two pills no longer treats that pain.

Withdrawal - Having uncomfortable or even dangerous symptoms when a person stops using/taking the addictive substance. For example: if a person drinks frequently and wakes up in the morning with the shakes, they are already going into withdrawal and generally have to have a drink to stop the shakes. When someone stops smoking, they have headaches, get grumpy, anxious and irritable. That's withdrawal.

Difficulty controlling use - Either having problems controlling the amount one is using or difficulty controlling the number times (per day/per week) one is using.

Using in spite of negative consequences - people who are addicted will often continue to use in spite of the risk of losing friendships, family members, jobs, grades, opportunities and health.

Spending significant time or emotional energy- A key indicator of addiction is spending a lot of time trying to obtain, use, hide, or plan use of a substance. Thinking about how to explain or minimize use, or having difficulty doing tasks for thinking about use are warning signs.

Trying to cut down - Often people who are addicted have a deep desire to cut down and simply be a "normal" user. People find themselves making deals with themselves or another person, such as "I'm only going to have TWO tonight." or, "This week, I am only going to drink one time." Placing these rules on a person's use is rarely an effective strategy as these promises to self typically end up broken and a source of guilt. The bottom line is that people who are "normal" users (example: "normal" drinkers) do not need to cut down or do not have trouble cutting should they decide to do so for health reasons.

There is HELP for addiction. If you or someone you know exhibits any of these symptoms, there is ALWAYS help very close by. If you find yourself in this situation, post a new question about how to get help.

There are two other methods claiming successes in treating pornography addiction are Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Can pornography harm you?

it depends what you mean, well actually, it can't harm you at all, masturbation is considered healthy by most medical authorities, and the old wives taels such as "you'll go blind" are nonsense. ---- Yes, it can. Pornography leads to sex addiction, which releases the same chemicals in your as substance abuse. It is much harder to overcome because the drug is all in your head, you can just think about it and release the same chemicals while with substance abuse you need to physically have the drugs or alcohol. Those with sex addiction are usually in denial, and need to go through intense therapy to overcome it.

What is additive drug?

Drug "addition" or addiction? If you do mean drug addiction, different people have different opinions regarding what constitutes actual drug addiction ( as opposed to use). There is also no universally accepted, set in stone definition of "drug addiction"(by the drug treatment and/or mental health profession, or professionsals with credible expertise in the field). There is only the best-answer- available, or that can be provided so far. You can look it up via the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), and other souces. Do know, though, that phyisiological addiction does not necessarily equal actual addiction or abuse. There is a time component and harm component both to be considered when assessing whether someone has an addiction to drugs. Abuse is also not necessarily an addiction, unless it becomes chronic (longer term). This question is HUGELY debated, and is a very important question. A good book with actual, unbiased facts regarding addiction and drugs is "Buzzed".
