More description on the pain would be helpful, but I will tell you all of the possibilities! It is possible that you are having heartburn. Since you say it is worse on an empty stomach, you could possibly have a broken/bruised rib that is compressed by the lungs and the spine (assuming you hunch when you cough). It is also possible that you have a hernia, although usually the pain would be lower on the body. Can you feel something pop out? If so, then it is a hernia. It is also possible, although unlikely, that you have some sort of lung problem, which could range from cancer to deflated lungs. If the pain persists for more than 2 weeks, or becomes severe and is accompied by blood in your stool (poop) or when you cough, see a doctor, ASAP!
