Deborah was a judge in the Old Testament. The exact way she became a judge is not listed but it was probably due in part to her being a prophetess. According to tradition, she was exceptionally righteous and learned.
There is no scripture that says exactly how long Deborah and Barak did judging, but we can get a very rough idea from the info available.
The period of JUDGES extended for 350 years from the time Israel entered the Promised Land in 1473 BCE to 1117 BCE(when Saul began to reign as the first king in Israel).
There were twelve consecutive judges who cared for the judicial needs of Israel. They were: Othniel, Ehud, Shemgar, Barak(and Deborah the prophetess, who worked with him) , Gideon, Tola, Jair, Jephthah(began judging Israel in 1173 BCE), Ibzan, Elon, Abdon and Samson.
So, if we put it all together...devide up the 350 yrs between 1473 and 1117, by 12, it's about 29 years each...but of course many judgeships overlapped, and some were short and some longer....then ADD the fact that after Sisera was killed by Jael (as prophesied by Deborah)(Judges 4:22), Judges 5:31 tells us that the land had 'no further disturbance for forty years' (Judges 4:4-5), we can get a very rough idea of the length of their judgeship....maybe 30-40 years?? Just guesswork.
she obeyed God's command by telling Barak and stood strong when he refused to go.
Deborah was important, because she was the only female judge. Also, she was a prophetess among her people
