Edison's first patented invention was an electric vote tabulator, allowing legislators to count votes in seconds instead of minutes. Problem was, legislators didn't WANT to have their votes recorded that fast, they wanted a system where they could make (literally) last second deals. When Edison found out that nobody wanted his invention, he resolved to work only on projects that people wanted.
