Rommel became an expert in desert warfare. In his notes discovered after WW 2 he wrote about the results of trapping an enemy force on all sides and what the result would be. He noted that this would place the opposing commander in the worst position possible. Even if trapped on three of four sides, the enemy would be receiving incoming fire from almost all angles. The only possible tactic then available would to pick a weak point in the surrounding army and retreat, losing lines of supply and communication. Also, many armored vehicles would be damaged or destroyed.
