Samuel de Champlain

My report is on Samuel de Champlain. He was a French explorer, map maker, and navigator. He led many French expeditions from his home country France to upper North Eastern America. He was known as the father of New France, because he founded Quebec in 1608 a French colony in Canada, and many other areas in North Eastern North America.

Samuel de Champlain was born in Borage, France in 1567, the exact date is uncertain. He was born to a family of master mariners. He received maritime education from his father, a ship captain. His wife lived in Quebec with him. They arranged their marriage when she was only 12. His age at the time is uncertain. They were legally married when she was 14. He also served in the army for King Henry the fourth. He spent many years, from 1603 to 1615 exploring the world for France on expeditions. He discovered Lake Champlain in 1609, mapped the Great Lakes, and founded Quebec. He died in Quebec December 25th 1635

Samuel de Champlain's purpose was to explore more of the new world, map it, and set up French settlements for France. His first expedition to the North America was in 1603. He went with Francois Grave Du Ponts expedition and charted the St. Lawrence Valley. His second expedition to North America was in 1604 to 1607. He went with Pierre De Monts and charted the Atlantic Coast, from Nova Scotia to Martha's Vineyard. His third expedition to North America was in 1608 and he led himself. This was the expedition in which he founded Quebec.

The most important expedition that Samuel de Champlain took was his third when he traveled from France to Quebec. He led this trip. It took 50 days. He took 1 boat and 32 colonists. Their trip went smoothly with no problems. Samuel de Champlain was successful in establishing the French fur trade center and Quebec. They built houses made of wood. He became friends with Indians called Huron. The hardship he encountered in Quebec was that colonists did not survive the first winter. The reason was because they ran out of food, and the sickness.

When Samuel de Champlain arrived in Quebec he quickly established friendship with an Indian tribe called Hurons. Shortly after their friendship was established, the Hurons insisted they help in the war against the Iroquois Marauders. Samuel de Champlain set out with about 200 Indians and about 30 French and went to invade the Iroquois Marauders. They never found them. They set out again and found a group of the Iroquois Marauders. They defeated them and won the war. After the battle Samuel de Champlain built a fort in Quebec called the habitation. It had 2 story wooden tall buildings with a moat around them.

Samuel de Champlain did everything he intended to. He settled Quebec and mapped the upper coast of North America. His expedition led to the first French civilization in the new world. Samuel de Champlain lived until he died in Quebec December 25th 1635. Samuel de Champlain discovered the lake he named after him: Lake Champlain and he founded Quebec in the new world.

i did a report on him at school and that was what i wrote

Where did Samuel de Champlain want to go?

Samuel De Champlain wanted to help gain wealth for France since it was a poor country and had no way of gaining wealth. King Henry IV wanted people to find new land so Samuel De Champlain didn't really actually care where he wanted to go. He just wanted to find wealth for France. No, he did not want to go to Asia! Christopher Columbus did and Henry Hudson but not Samuel De Champlain. I never get why people get so confused with these facts.
