Shakespeare did not have a "great financial gain in 1605". What would lead you to that conclusion? And in any case, his life after 1605 was remarkably similar to his life before it--he made no changes to his lifestyle at this time. He still acted and wrote plays, just like before.

At about the peak of his career. Othello is usually thought to have been written in 1604 or so (there is a performance record in 1605) at which time Shakespeare was 40 years old and on top of his game.

A certain amount, yes. The issue of religion was extremely divisive and both extreme Protestants and Catholics caused trouble. Of course the Intelligence Department was on to the sundry plots to take over the government by revolution and let them develop to the point of no return, as they did with Guy Fawkes in 1605. In the last few years of Queen Elizabeth's life there was a certain amount of tenseness since it was not exactly clear who should succeed her. Yes, people took their religion seriously in those days. Religious affiliation had a serious political dimension in Europe after the Reformation. In England, the official Church was the Church of England, and anyone who didn't go to church would be required to pay a fine. People who supported some other religious view were likely to be tortured or killed. On the other hand, supporting the Roman Catholic religion was like wanting to overthrow the monarchy, and in fact, Catholics did try to kill the king in 1605 (The Guy Fawkes Plot).
