I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

In his book, Walden.Chapter 1 (Economy),Thoreau states that the 4 only things that a man must have to live are,"food, clothing, shelter, and fuel".
The main idea of Walden by Henry David Thoreau is that people spend too much time doing things they don't want to do in order to get things they don't need. A family mentioned in the book is a perfect example of this. The family works hard, though they dislike it, in order to be able to afford conveniences such as coffee. Henry David Thoreau then goes on to say that people should quit working so hard, and do away with things they don't need, as this would make them happier. This basic concept can be found in much of what is discussed in Walden.
Thoreau observes that people often rush to the scene of a fire when they hear the fire bells, out of curiosity and a desire for excitement, rather than genuine concern for those involved. He criticizes this as a reflection of society's tendency to be drawn to sensationalism and spectacle, while ignoring the deeper, more meaningful aspects of life.
