∙ 14y agoThe Israelites were not lead by god with any special thing to guide them to the red sea. But god guided them in the wilderness , by a pillar of cloud in the day and a pillar of light in the night.

The above answer is not entirely accurate. The pillar of cloud and of fire was not synonymous with the presence of God. Rather, it was a miraculous physical phenomenon which demonstrated that God's presence (which is not physical) was with them.
