The people believed that god sent birds down to carry the plague. They started going against the churches and priests because they felt what god was doing was wrong. They believed that is was the end of the world because so many people were dying.

Actually there was another belief that the Great King death started it! He had the body of a skeleton but it could still walk and talk. People believed that if you underestimated or hurt his feelings and got him angry, he would attack you in your sleep and you would have the black plague.

In medieval times (when the black plague was at it's fiercest people did not understand that the black plague was caught from fleas but thought it was an illness from Lucifer/satin/the devil. The medieval people thought the sickness would stop being contagious after the bodies were burnt. Unfortunately for them the fleas had fled the body long before it was burnt thus creating more sickness and death.

Healers tried to ward off the plague by wearing masks and reciting incantations. The effectiveness of these methods in unknown but severely doubted. People killed all the rats and pets. They buried dead bodies deep and burnt everything.
