Ovid did not really establish anything. His writing was a caricaturing of old themes, rather than an invention of anything new. He was considered one of the three canonic poets of Latin literature (with Virgil and Horace) and the last of the Latin canonic love elegists. He was a master of the elegiac couplet.
Ovid was influential over the centuries. He influenced Dante, Petrarch, Chaucer, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Milton, Cervantes, Pushkin and Joyce. He also influenced renaissance painters, especially Botticelli and Rubens. Benjamin Britten and Bob Dylan were also influenced by Ovid.
An elegy is a mournful, melancholic or plaintive poem. A couplet is a pair of lines of meter in poetry. It usually consists of two lines that rhyme and have the same meter. In an elegiac couplet, each couplet usually makes sense on its own, while forming part of a larger work and consists of a hexameter verse followed by a pentameter verse.
