in 1750 they didn't have the conveniences that we have today. They couldn't go to the grocery store and get what they needed for the next couple weeks. They lived "hand to mouth" They had to work for their food every day, and just about everything that they did was in some way related to providing that need. Their parties usually consisted of getting together and raising a barn, shucking corn, thrashing grains, etc. They had very little "spare" time to be idle and look for something to do. In the villages back then, there were people that were doing different trades, but then again, it was to procure food. The blacksmith would be making nails to trade to a farmer for eggs, or something along those lines. If you didn't work, you didn't eat.

If you look at the average life span back then, an old person was 30-40 years old. The constant strain of work and life shortened their life spans considerably. You started working as soon as you could walk just about and you worked until you died. There was no way around it.
