Chickens, like a lot of animals, already have maternal instincts. This means they already know how to brood chicks. If you are wanting your chicken to go broody, some people use *fake eggs which they leave in the nesting box or chosen 'broody pen' to persuade the hen to become broody.
*Chickens might eat real eggs.
They will need food and water close to the area they are brooding in. Broody hens actually do leave the nest for a few minutes at a time to defecate, eat and drink. Keep a small amount of both food and water within a few yards of the nest.

The hen decides when she will brood. You cannot hasten or start her brooding.
When a chicken broods she is sitting on her eggs. So long as they have access to clean food and water and their brood box is in a ventilated area the chicken will not die.
any hen (that means all breeds of chickens and ducks) that is laying may be broody.
Brooding chickens are the breeding stock. Sometimes and old hen is best kept as a brooding hen for raising chicks.

There are 3 development stages in raising chicken. The first one is hatching, the second is brooding and finally rearing the chicken.
A broody hen is the term used when a hen is ready to sit on and hatch eggs, or is already sitting on eggs or has chicks. Basically, a hen in a 'mothering mood'. You can tell she's broody by the deep clucks she makes, her fluffing up her feathers and possibly squawking when anyone (including the rooster) comes near, desire to sit on eggs, and of course, if she already has chicks.
This is not uncommon. Chickens do not brood because they lay fertilized eggs, they brood because it is instinct and they will set eggs fertilized or not. Hens will and can set on golf balls if offered to the broody hen. Removal of eggs daily from the broody hen will dissuade her from maintaining her brooding but this could take a few days. Whenever possible, pick her up and take her away from the nesting box, continuing this until she gives up.
She was brooding over a problem.
