Coffee, rice, tobacco, sugarcane, cocoa beans, corn, and bananas are some of the primary agricultural products of Colombia. Many natives raise their own food.
Coca Plants
Natives in Colombia also harvest the leaves of the coca plant, which they have used medicinally for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, the chemical cocaine, a powerful narcotic, can be concentrated from these leaves, and illegally sold for drug abuse. As with opium poppies in Asia, the value of the crop is a strong incentive to grow and sell coca leaves, in spite of the efforts of the government to discourage it.
