SSNs are broken up as such: AAA-GG-SSSS the first three numbers are geographical area of registrants zip code at the time of application, (since 1973 before that it was the number of the regional office issuing the card.) The second two numbers are the group code issued out in the following order as each group fills out the "Serial" section which is the last 4 digits, Odd numbers 01-09, Even 10-98, Even 02-08, Odd 11-99. No group can have all zeros. And of course as stated before the last four digits are the Serial section issued in order, 0001-9999 within that group and area.
I found this information from the Social Security Administration:
*The digits in the Social Security number allow for the orderly assignment of numbers. The number is divided into three parts: the area, group and serial numbers.
*The first three (3) digits (area) of a person's social security number are determined by the ZIP Code of the mailing address shown on the application for a social security number. See the first Related Link below for more information.
"Within each area, the group number (middle two (2) digits) range from 01 to 99 but are not assigned in consecutive order. For administrative reasons, group numbers issued first consist of the ODD numbers from 01 through 09 and then EVEN numbers from 10 through 98, within each area number allocated to a State. After all numbers in group 98 of a particular area have been issued, the EVEN Groups 02 through 08 are used, followed by ODD Groups 11 through 99. Within each group, the serial numbers (last four (4) digits) run consecutively from 0001 through 9999.
*Further information about Social Security Numbers that are currently assigned is available on SSA's website at See for more facts the Related Links below.

The first three digits are called the area number, the next two digits are called the group number, and the last four digits are the serial numbers. The area numbers are assigned on the basis of the zip-code on your SSN application. The group numbers are just for bookkeeping purposes only, they don't have any specific meaning. In each group number, the serial numbers are allocated consecutively from 0001 to 9999.
The first 3 numbers of your ss determines the state is was issued in, generally the state you were born in.

First three numbers is the geographical area. Next two numbers is the group number. They start with odd then do even, not in a consecutive order. The last four is the serial number from 0001 to 9999. Unfortunately not that interesting or intuitive, kind of random numbers picked for each person.

Serial numbers on any bills are counters and a security feature. A specific serial number doesn't stand for anything except the order in which a particular bill was printed as part of a print run.
Yes, usually by simply visiting the nearest Social Security office with a current picture ID issued by a state or government office, and your birth certificate. If you need a new card because you got married and thus you changed your name, then also bring the wedding certificate issued by the county you were married. When I got married, I took my aforementioned documents and spent approximately 15 minutes waiting for a clerk, 10 minutes at the window, and had my new card with my new legal name in less than 2 weeks, at no charge.
