Usually a drug test involves only a urine sample, which may or may not be taken under the the direct (visual) supervision of medical or law enforcement personnel. Sometimes an additional blood sample may be taken or an oral swab. Alcohol can be tested several ways but is most commonly done through the breathalyzer test in which you blow into a device that detects blood alcohol levels.
Some independent studies have shown that consumption of large (but not implausible) amounts of poppy seeds prior to a drug test may yield a false positive for opiates. This has even been tested on the popular Discovery television show Mythbusters.
Before taking a drug test it may be advisable to inform the person administering the test of any prescription drugs you are currently on or have taken in the last 3 months that may interfere with the results (such as prescription painkillers). The person administering the test should have access to your medical records, but it certainly cannot hurt.

You will not fail a DRUG test if you drink alcohol the night before. It's a DRUG TEST, which means they are testing for illegal sustances, not alcohol intake. But that doesnt mean to get excessively drunk the night before either, 3 or 4 drinks is ok.
Most drug test do not test for alcohol.... but if you are talking about a brethalizer: probably not.
