The Venda do not eat pork or crocodiles. They believe the brain of the crocodile is poisonous and so don't hunt them for food. However they do include Mopane worms in their cuisine - a handy snack!

Just about every day they eat pap (maize meal porridge) with meat or vegetables. Sour pap is also enjoyed. Ground nuts are added to many dishes like samp. Pumpkins leaves are cooked and eaten like spinach.

Food is important to their belief system and they give food as offerings to the water spirits who they believe can't grow anything under the water.

Pregnant women grind up the bark of the Marula Tree and eat this in a belief that this will help them determine the sex of their child. If they want a daughter they grind the bark of a female Marula tree, only the female tree produces fruit.
