The bombing was a terrible thing as is all war but, at the time, it probably saved a lot more people than it killed. The Japanese are and were Avery proud people and our troops during world war two observed the incredible tenacity of the Japanese in battle even on remote islands. Our leaders at the time knew that on the homeland of Japan they were teaching women and children to fight with clubs if the Americans invaded. The real concern for our military leaders was that Japanese women and children would fight to the death to defend their homeland and frankly, we did not want our soldiers in hand to hand combat with civilian women and children. So they dropped the bombs to try to force Japanese leadership to surrender and avoid an all out invasion.

If we had not stopped the Japanese they would have continued to brutally attack the entire Asian theater. Remember, the Japanese were not innocent bystanders in world war two. They were a brutal and savage aggressor repsponsible for things like the Bataan death march and other atrocities.

Did Japan refuse to surrender after the bombing of Hiroshima?

No, Japan didn't immediately refuse after the bombing of Hiroshima. After the bombing, Emperor Hirohito (the Japanese leader during the Second World War) went into consultation with the Imperial War Council (of Japan) where they were deciding whether or not to surrender. However, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima, America bombed Japan again, this time in Nagasaki. Roughly a week after the Nagasaki bombing, Emperor Hirohito on 15 August 1945 announced surrender via radio broadcast. He officially surrendered in written agreement later that year on 2 September 1945.
