It equals a lot of education and eight years in college. The time it equals something, is when the registrar indicates you have satisfied all the requirements of a specific program and validates you have graduated with the degree; Whether an associates, bachelor's, master's, or doctorate.
It depends what programs you take, and what you do in school for those 8 years.
Here are some examples, assuming all 8 years are post secondary (after highschool):
1) University for 2 years, drop out, then go to college for 2 years taking art classes, then go to college for 2 years taking nursing, drop out, then go to college for 2 years in cullinary arts. 8 years of school total, final outcome...you are a cook.
2) University for 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree, university for another 4 years to do a second undergraduate degree. 8 years of school, final outcome.... 2 undergraduate degrees.
3) University for 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree, university for another 2 years to do a masters degree, 2 more years to do a second masters degree. 8 years of school, final outcome.... 1 undergraduate degree and 2 masters degrees.
4) University for 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree, university for another 2 years to do a masters degree, university for another 3 years to do a PhD. 9 years of school, final outcome....1 undergraduate degree, 1 masters degree, 1 doctorate in philosophy (PhD).
5) University for 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree, university for another 4 years to do a professional doctorate (medicine, chiropractic, podiatry, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, etc). 8 years in school, final outcome...1 undergraduate degree and a health care professional doctorate.
I have never heard of an eight year degree, unless one is a part-time student. However, there are careers that require eight years of schooling beyond high school. For example, a physician which would take four years for The Bachelor's degree and four additional years for the medical degree. Still, in most careers that require a doctorate ( not necessarily a medical degree), takes eight years beyond high school completion.
