Michelle Obama had a long history as a lawyer and then a businesswoman (hospital administrator), before becoming First Lady. She is currently (along with her husband the president) raising two daughters, but she is also performing the duties expected of a First Lady. While the job of being First Lady is generally considered a ceremonial (unpaid) position, historically, the wives of presidents have often become more popular than their husbands. First Ladies are known for volunteerism and for supporting worthy causes. Mrs. Obama has represented the United States at certain events (such as the Olympics), and given a number of motivational speeches to school-aged children. She also has taken on the causes of fighting childhood obesity by promoting exercise and healthier eating; encouraged Americans to get more involved with gardening; and advocated for the families of men and women serving in the military.
