There are at least four versions for the origin of the name Paraguay. The literal translation from Guaraní is Para = of many varieties, Gua = from, belonging to or place, Y = water, river or lake.

There is no consensus on where the name came from. Some state that it may be from the name of the chief of a local tribe. Others suggest that it may be a conglomerate of Guarani words, either meaning "from he water", "riverine of many varieties" or "river crowned".
