The is no definitive way to know if a building is a Gurdwara, but most are decorated grandly and/or have The Nishan Sahib, an orange flag with the Khanda (The symbol of Sikhism), flying outside them.
On the left hand side the men sit to pray and on the right the ladies sit to pray this is so that they dont get confused when they pray as they say different things.
when entering the gurdwara you have to make sure that all your hair on your face is covered (apart from your beard) and you have to take your shoes off, this is just the way they like to do things.
