In the modern navy, seaman comprise a number of different trades. For example, Radar Plotters, Sonarmen, Weapons Underwater, Weapons Surface, and Boatswains all come under the umbrella of seamen. Although the first four trades have primary duties within their own respective branch; it is the Bos'n who is regarded as the professional seaman. When an evolution requires many hands to work the ship, these other branches are called upon to lend a hand.

The Bos'n is tasked with maintenance of any and all ship's rigging, care and maintenance of the ship's boats, and care and maintenance of upper deck fittings.

Care and maintenance of all ship's small arms, and any other joe job the XO can think of.
