In general, the word elder means older and is usually used to refer to someone who is among the older ones in a group of people. It is also used as a an alternative comparative form of old, elder instead of older, and then means simply the one of two who has greater age.

In some Christian churches, an Elder is a person valued for his wisdom who accordingly holds a particular position of responsibility in a Christian group.

Usually its the older of two people with the same name, more often father and son, like senior and junior although people barely use elder or younger anymore. It can also mean a very wise man of a tribe (who is usually very old) or an association, maybe even a kingdom. You can refer it to Eldest, which in the eragon series is is the name for the leader of the old riders. Elder was used during medievel times but not anymore.
