What does guinea mean in guinea pig?
Guinea is a country in West Africa. However this animal originated in South America. It is possible that the name of Guinea got mixed up with Guiana (which is in South America). Or it is possible that, when the animal was introduced to England or North America someone used the name Guinea because the though it was appropriate for this new import from a faraway and strange place.

When a guinea pig makes a noise it is trying to tell us or another guinea pig something. It also does mean when it is excited.
It doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. Sneezing for guinea pigs is just like humans. I would say that if there isn't any other symptoms then it is just normal clearing of the nostrils. But if they do have other symptoms like coughing, lack of vitamin c, and they're not eating, then that… is bad. (MORE)
the term 'in coat' is used in the guinea pig fancy by those breeders who wish to show the animal in competition. If a long haired breed has had its coat trimmed by the owner or even if it has been chewed by another piggie, as sometimes happens, then that animal would not be eliglble to be shown in i…ts breed category at a guinea pig show as the coat would be deemed spoiled by the judges who are looking for perfection. Guinea pig shows are much like a miniature crufts...and the owners take the standards very seriously.. So one breeder may offer an animal for sale , but descibe it as not in coat... meaning, needs time and attention to bring up it up to show standard... nothing else. it certainly does NOT mean there is anything wrong with the piggie, or that it is bald!!. The long haired varieties are not allowed to be cut or clipped in any way in top competition, and the owners of the top prize longhairs roll the coat around small papers in sections to keep it from being damaged, and out of the animals way... at the competition, the owner is given 5 minutes to removes the 'papers' and brush the coat ready to present them looking their glorious best. For pictures and more information see the National Cavy Club website.. hope this helps. (MORE)
While I can't speak for every guinea pig, I know that my guinea pig does something similar to a cat's purr which may feel like a vibration when you pet the guinea pig. It's general a sign of affection, but they sometimes do it as a fear response to sudden loud noises.
Gui9neas are facinating and intelligent critters who make about 20 separate noises.. all which indicate its mood or need and much pleasure can be gained by knowing what its saying to you!! When it squawks.. usually GP people say wheeps, this is its most common normal noise and means several things. …It usually is a cry for attention. Hoi I want fed!! Hey come play with me!! or even Help!! my owner is trying to pick me up and I am nervous!!!. Watch the pigs behaviour and you will soon see what they are trying to tell you.. I have several and I cannot rustle a carrier bag, without causing a chorus of wheeping.. this is because they know that I have a veggie treat for them and its time to beg to be first to get a titbit. They are super smart.. Their warning noise is a low buzz. When calm and happy and often being stroked and cuddled they suck their teeth which is a guinea pig purr a happy noise. And a distinct BRRRRR noise is usually a boy fancying a gal and saying, hello darlin!!. Lastly and most important, if a guinea is very very angry and upset...it will make a repeated t,t,t,t,t,t, sort of spitting noise. This is its fighting talk. and if a guinea is doing that, never put you hand in as its very upset. Throw a towel over the animal and scoop it up gently and hold it and talk calmly to it till it calms down. This is VERY RARE, and you may keep guineas their whole life and never hear it, but its useful to know. (MORE)
It either means the animal is angry or in pain so make sure you check it to make sure it's ok but it can also mean it is happy and it's another way of them squeaking. if you are stroking them and they start growling it probably means they're happy.
it means it is afraid. if vibrates when your holding it,you should let it back into its cage.
it really doesn't mean any thing.just think why do we sneez.it is the same as us.
Guinea pigs are herd animals, and sounds are their primary means of communication and maintaining social rank. There are many various sounds which they produce, but most common are: . wheeking (anticipation, excitement) . rumbling (fear, anger) . bubbling and purring (happiness) . chutting and …whining (annoyance, dislike) . teeth chattering (aggression) . squealing or shrieking (pain, fear) Please check the related link to learn about guinea pig sounds in more detail and to actually hear them. It mostly means that they wont be friends. You should separate them so they don't hurt each other. They could be scared of each other or they don't like one another. If their 2 males they are probably going to fight. ----- It depends on many factors. If they are displaying dominance (gender is no…t an issue, girls and boys do this), it's called 'rumble strutting' which consists of the pig moving very slowly, almost vibrating because of the deep rumbling sound he/she makes and moving his/her bum very high in the air. What usuall follows this is a nip to the pig they are aiming it at, and perhaps a fight. However, I own two males who rumble strut at each other all the time, but they get along just fine and there haven't been any signs of violence - their ears are perfect. Keep an eye out for any bites on your pigs ears, or their backs and if there are, you need to separate them immediately. Another reason for rumble strutting is that the male/female wants to mate with the other one. Males normally take it upon themselves to practise this at least once a day, but for females it's actually an indication that they're in heat, so they will proceed to sexually harass their cagemate. Make sure that your pigs are the same sex; there are many articles on the internet with images that can help you. This last bit isn't entirely unrelated, but if a pig is really happy about you stroking them in the right way when you're handling them, they will make the deep rumbling sound. Hope I helped. (MORE)
ussaly when your guinea pig clicks its becase somethings wrong or they want to be picked up
when guinea pigs squeal it mean they are either scared of you, or you have accidentally hurt them in some way or they want you to feed them, Communication.
Guinea Pigs are vocal little guys. Mainly, they make noise when they are happy, angry and excited. They make a low grunt when fighting though. SO, if you hear them a lot when its dinner time you know why, most pigs go crazy for any food.
Good Question. For guinea pigs, "pup" means a "baby" guinea pig. For boys, it is called "boar". For Girls, they are called "sow".
You are referring to what is called ; Wheeking It sounds like a squeal.. It could mean it is happy, But usually the wheek is when they are hungry , they are just trying to let you know.. But it could also be another sound with a different meaning.
if the oink sounds like a squeak it means warning. if it sounds more like a grunt it means they are exploring in curiosity.
It wants to move to china No it means that you guinea pig wantss you to stop that
If she nips you out of anger, then that could mean that she's just a bit scared, you should give her some time. My guinea pig has kind of tried to chew my finger. I think it's because she tastes the salt our body produces, or maybe because she just feels like doing it. If this sounds like yours, th…en you could get her one of those salt chewing sticks for your guinea pig, it might help. (MORE)
Wen a guinea pig purrs it usaully means that the guinea pig is happy and content and if your petting it it likes how you are petting it.
This is a good question. When Guinea Pigs growl, they usually are telling you to back off or to get away. It does not mean that your pig hates you though. It also might mean that the Guinea Pig wants to mate... That's probably the most common. Hope this helps :)
it means they u or something or someone is hurting your guinea pig *not usually... they squeal for attention, food, treats, and to communicate with other guinea pigs! It really means that they are either hungry, talking, or trying to get more food after they just had a feast!
don't panic there is nothing to worry about if your guinea pig coughs a little. It probably has little bit of food stuck in its throat. But if it coughs a lot and dosen't eat or drink anymore then you should take it to the vet.
guinea pigs do this for a number of reasons. check its food, water and if it is doing it excessivly, pick him/her up and and check that it has no cuts or lumps. they do this sometimes however, just out of boredom.
if it sounds like a low rumble- if you have two it's a threat or one of them wants to dominate the other. i can also mean like it's enjoying a petting from you depending on whats happening.
If they are shivering constantly than they may be cold or ill. If they are only doing it once in a while, it is fine and natural behavior.
It means that it's getting used to it's surrondings, you can get it checked out but you don't need to unless it looks sick or hurt
A Guinea pig will bump you or push your hand with its head if it wants you to stop stroking or touching it. It's their way of telling you to stop and let them relax. Bumping or pushing your hand away can also be a way that your guinea pig is trying to inform you that it needs to pee.
It's instinct for guinea pigs to find a dark, enclosed space to hide. When your guinea pig burrows into you, he's just trying to find somewhere to hide.
it depends on what you call it really it means when a guinea pig jumps on four feet some people call it popcorn
It can mean anything from pain to happiness. Our guinea pigs used to cry or "whee" when we brought them food. They would run up to us wheeing out of excitement for their food and would stand on our feet eagerly. They would also sometimes whee when we put them in their running cage and they had to t…ravel a distance to see each other. They would whee as they ran down the length of the cage and back again, I suppose it was to let the other know that it was a safe place to be. They would also whee when they were angry with each other, when they had fights and when they felt like being promiscuous. Don't worry, though. It's completely normal. (MORE)
If it is a gently squeking this probably means your guinea pig is happy if they are teeth chattering they are getting annoyed, if the are squeking really loud for a long time they are probably hungrey or thursty, if while you holding one it suddenly yelps high pitched squel you hurt it and need to t…ake more care. you clearly dont connect well with your pet and i would suggest reading at least a childrens guide to looking after your pet it may be feed up and bored try a cuddle and offering it some food (MORE)
Means they are happy the louder they are the happier the guinea pig is they also squeak if your about to feed them nd they know food is coming
If your guinea pig is oinking, it is trying to get your attention or is hungry.
When a guinea pig purrs it means it is happy and contented...my guinea pig used to purr every time I picked her up and snuggled into her ears....
They might be smelling something in the air, they may be using a sniff to make a noise, or they might be sick.
Calling someone a guinea pig means that they are being called a 'test subject'. This originates from guinea pigs being used for tests.
Calling someone a guinea pig means they are the first to try something. The idiom came from animal testing- guinea pigs are often the ones that medicines are tested on before human trials.
It means that you have to see a vet as soon as you can. The guinea pig can die from it if it is worrying. Usually the vet will jab it and give it tablets to help it from tummy troubles.
It might be sleeping, or it might be too tired to move. Then again, it might be scared of something.
It doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. Sneezing for guinea pigs is just like humans. I would say that if there isn't any other symptoms then it is just normal clearing of the nostrils. .
It is known as pop-corning and Guinea Pigs do it when they are very happy or excited.
it means your guinea pig is unhappy. try playing with it and giving it treats.
It just means they are a bit scared and just no no who you are yet. You need to give them time because if you dont, they get mad and never like you
It means they couldn't be any happier than they are right then. but, don't get it confused with their really loud squealing, cause that means they're hungry!
I'm not sure what it means, but you should take it to the vet, or just see what happens in the next day or so. :)
It probably ate too much so it got sick or it is just sick with a cold.
It means you came in and accidentally scared or they hear footsteps of a human or pet and haven't seen them yet or get used to them
Depends. It can mean lots of different things. If the chirping is loud and high-pitched, it's most often pain, anger or when the pig is trying to tell you something like go away or leave me alone. If it's repetitive and faint it's probably contentment, or guinea pig talk, because pigs like to chatte…r. (MORE)
there playing . he can want more room if the other guinea pig is invading his space
