it could mean a lot of things. often, the person in jail is living a very different life from the life they lived outside of jail and it is hard for them to deal with loved ones who are still living that life. Its hard for them to think about those outside because it makes them think of all that they are missing. Often, there is a lot of shame about being incarcerated, one doesn't want their loved ones to see them that way. Life in jail is different from life on the outside and sometimes its simply hard to communicate to those on the otherside because you're coming from two very different places.
