The peafowl are forest birds that nest on the ground but roost in trees. They are terrestrial feeders.
Both species of Peafowl are believed to be polygamous. However, it has been suggested that "females" entering a male Green Peafowl's territory are really his own juvenile or subadult young (K. B. Woods in litt. 2000) and that Green Peafowl are really monogamous in the wild. The male peacock flares out its feathers when it is trying to get the female's attention. Those who subscribe to this notion cite the similarities between the sexes.
During mating season they will often emit a very loud high pitched cry.
There are two main reasons a peacock fans his tail:
1) He is attempting to attract or initiate mating with a peahen.
2) He is trying to intimidate another individual, be it peacock, person, or animal, and get them to leave "his" territory.
Be careful. Peacocks with fanned tails are in an aggressive mood and may attack. Do NOT turn your back on him. Maintain eye contact with him and move out of range, 10 feet or more away.
Usually, it would be to impress a female to get a mate. It also is to intimidate enemies, like making itself big and having a thousand staring eyes.

In my opinion, the peacock has one of the most beautiful feathers from all the birds in the world. They contain many beautiful colours in a wonderful pattern which the peacock displays when it puts it feathers up into the air.
