This would normally indicate one of two things.
They are:
* He is calling or sending sms messages to someone he doesn't want you to know about. Its common enough. It doesn't mean he's seeing this person, but you need to find out what is going on.
* He is tired of you using his phone to save yourself the cost of calling on your phone. This is also common. Use your own phone.

He may have been having a heart to heart conversation with someone and isn't ready to tell you what they were talking about.
If you can't trust him, you shouldn't be dating.
