The official language is the language that is mostly used in official departments. In many countries it is also the spoken language. However, in many countries it could be different than the spoken language(s) there.

That happens sometime in small countries that use a more common language than their native language for official use. However, it may also occur in countries where the official language is not the common spoken language, such as in the Arab World where the spoken languages are remarkably different from Arabic, the official language there.
