The standard Latin crucifix has an upright wooden post and a cross piece that is closer to the top of the vertical post to which the victims arms are nailed. The earliest descriptions of the cross on which Jesus was crucified compared it to a lowercase t. There is, however, some debate as to the actual method in which Jesus was crucified.

The cross as a symbol of worship has been in use since early Babylonian times. It came be seen in the wall paintings of ancient Egypt as the Crux ansate and has carried on historically in use by the vestal virgins of pagan Rome. Roman "Christianity" adopted it as a symbol about 300 years after the death of Christ.

The early Christians would not have used the cross in worship A. Because of its pagan origin, And B. because the Creator has told us not to use any man made object to worship him. And C. Because the Greek word ( Stau-ros'.) rendered cross in many modern translations actually means a stake or up right pole. Illustration. If a loved one was murdered. Say, by some one yielding an axe. And you then saw their surviving one, who loved and missed that person, wearing a tiny axe made of wood Gold or silver around their neck. You would, no doubt think one of two things. I. That some one had worked out a way to make big money out of their grief. E.g. They had been exploited. Or 2. Because of the mental stress of their experience, they had gone insane. True Christians do not use a cross of any kind in worship. Therefore to anser your question. There is no such thing as a Christian cross. The cross used in Christendom is shaped like a small t. But I'm sure you knew that already as you can see people wearing it in most countries in the world.

In the Catholic Church they use a crucifix more than a plain cross (a crucifix is a cross bearing a figure of the dying Christ) because their beliefs emphasis the death of Christ more. In the Anglican Church, however, the cross most often used is the plain cross that has no figure of Christ on it. As the Cross is empty, this represents the risen Christ, as Anglicans emphasise the resurrection more than the crucifixion, so a bare cross is more appropriate.

The word 'cross' is not in the ancient original Bible.

The Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek. The Greek word used is stau·ros.

The Companion Bible points out: "[Stau·rosâ²] never means two pieces of timber placed across one another at any angle . . . There is nothing in the Greek of the [New Testament] even to imply two pieces of timber."

It basically means "an upright pale or stake." That's what it looked like.

Even the King James version in Gal 3:13 uses the word 'tree' instead of 'cross'.

How did the word 'cross' then get placed into English Bibles?

W. E. Vine, respected British scholar in his book Vine'sExpository Dictionary of Old andNew Testament Words states: "By the middle of the 3rd cent. A.D. . . . pagans were received into the churches . . . and were permitted largely to retain their pagan signs and symbols. Hence the Tau or T, . . . with the cross-piece lowered, was adopted."

Therefore the cross is of pagan origins, having been adopted into the Churches, and conveniently tagged with the word 'Jesus'.

Answer

Christ was crucified on a cross, but there are at least 3 types: - "T-shaped" (or "low tau") . - "+ - shaped" (or "high-tau"). [This is the traditional shaped cross. ] - a vertical upright, such as a tree or post or stake.

Christ was made a curse for us and prophesied that such a person would be hung on a tree.

Galatians 3

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, "Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

This reference is in Deuteronomy Deuteronomy 21

23 His body shall not remain all night upon thetree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;)

Mat 27:32 KJV (32) And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his crossG4716

Strong's G4716 says the greek word for "cross" is "stauros" and means an upright stake, or post, permanently set in the ground.

Although other verses in "Acts" refer to Christ on a "tree", this is because the audience were jews and being referred back to what Moses said in Deuteronomy.

Acts 5

30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.

Acts 10

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on atree:

As Jesus was crucified on a "stauros" , meaning either a tree-trunk or a tall post, it meant He was only carrying the crosspiece on His shoulders, not an entire tree. After nailing Christ to the crossbeam, a couple ofthe Roman soldiers grabbed each end and dropped it into a slot in the top of the 'stauros'.

Still, it is really irrelevant whether the type of cross Christ died on was shaped like a "T", an "X", a "+", an "I" , a tree, a post, or stake: the end result was the same. Christ died for our sins, for the sins of everyone in the the entire world, He took the penalty of death that we deserve upon Himself. Christ saved people from death BUT although this FREE gift of salvation is available for all, it actually HAS TO BE ASKED FOR!

The cross is there to remind us of the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. The cross should not be worship, it used superstitiously or as a magic wand. The cross is simply a symbol to remind us of Jesus' sacrifice, much like the breaking and eating of bread and the drinking of wine is.

The cross is a symbol of Jesus, just like the flag is a symbol of a country. Because nobody knows what Jesus looked like, when we look at the cross we remember how Jesus hung on the cross, paid for our sins, died, then rose again. The cross itself has no special meaning aside from what Jesus gave to it.
