The Founder is first fully examined with his statue. Though the narrator views the college (and the Founder himself) as a source of knowledge and venue for raising a select few to an educated and somehow superior form of subservience. For raising the narrator to this higher caste, the school remains a symbol of hope despite the warnings of the vet and the failed six letters to officials in New York.
Despite this naive optimism, the narrator does understand the true purpose of the Founder in Invisible Man. When he views the statue of the founder lifting (or lowering) the veil over the eyes of the slave, he provides our only concrete view of the Founder. The eyes are blank and lifeless, and the veil, though removed from the eyes, is present and motionless, leaving an ambiguous state of motion. The college, similarly, educates African Americans but keeps them frozen in a state of semi-blindness. The bird droppings on the statue reveal its true value- though Founded to progress the state and education of African Americans, the original values are static and worthless when passed to the present.
The Founder represents a man who has achieved the American Dream, one who seeks to help others to reach it, but has his cause usurped by greed and deceit. The narrator begins the novel swept along by the shell of his statue, veiled to the truth and sure of his humble superiority. This first level of visibility is the first to be shattered in his journey towards self-discovery and invisibility.
