Red Pikmin are arguably the simplest Pikmin, in both form and function. They have high attack power and can withstand fire, whereas the other types of Pikmin look stranger and have a wider variety of uses. Also, you do not come into fire hazards early in either game, which means the more common electric and water hazards block a larger area of the world. Lastly, white and purple Pikmin could not be the first Pikmin you get in Pikmin 2 because they can only be created in caverns you need Pikmin to enter in the first place.
All five original pikmin have been confirmed by Mr. Miyamoto. In addition, as you have probably already seen,, are the rock pikmin. These, despite what people have been saying, are not like purple pikmin at all. Really the only similarity is they give a little umph when landing on an enemy, and even then, they attack by repeatedly throwing themselves at the enemy instead of latching on, and don't have the possibility of making the enemy dizzy, like the purple. A flying pink pikmin with blue eyes can be seen in the trailer for a brief moment at the beginning and end. It doesn't really give you a clear view, though. When confronted about it, Nintendo said they couldn't confirm nor deny the pink pikmin. They did, however, confirm that new unannounced pikmin would be seen later in the game.
When you are playing as Olimar, use his special (Button B) to pluck pikmin. Remember that you must be standing on something to pluck pikmin and that there is a limit to how many you can control.

Creeping Chrysanthemums are a type of enemy. They look like ordinary flowers (albeit with eyes) until you approach them, in which they turn into a vicious enemy that can devour your Pikmin. To prevent this, either trick the plant into snapping itself or throw purple Pikmin on it to stun it. You can see a picture and find out more information regarding the Creeping Chrysanthemum in the related link below.

Yeah, that's it. White, (Pikmin 2 only) Immune to Poison, and deals damage to enemies when eaten. Can also see underground to dig up extra treasure. Faster than average. Purple, (Pikmin 2 only) Slow, but has high attack power and can stun enemies. Is as strong as 10 Pikmin! Then there are some others: Mushroomin,(Pikmin 1 only) Evil Pikmin infested by a Puffstool Bulbmin (Pikmin 2 only) Underground only, and immune to Fire, Water, Electricity, and Poison!
First of all, only the cephalothorax is inflexible. The tail is flexible, and if you look at it closely, it is clearly segmented. The cephalothorax is actually also segmented internally, but is masked by the shell, called a carapace.
