A chicken's comb is the fleshy (usually red in an adult, yellow in a chick) part sitting on top of the chicken's head. There are different shapes/types, but the one most commonly thought of is called a single comb.
The comb of a chicken serves a dual purpose. For one thing it helps roosters attract mates. The redder the comb of the rooster is, the healthier he is. Secondly, it acts as a natural 'air conditioner'. Chickens originally come from hot, humid climates, so they need a way to stay cool. A lot of blood goes to the comb and wattles: this blood is cooled because it's exposed to air through the thin skin of the comb. The cooler blood then reenters the rest of the body, thus cooling the chicken (chickens don't sweat).
However, chickens have been bred to have several different kinds of combs, some very tiny. See below for a list and pictures of the different combs.

From what I find, there's several names. The three are comb, cockscomb, and cock's comb. Hope that's helpful!
There could be many reasons as to why a chickens comb could be bleeding. They are being picked on by other chickens - and the comb has been injured. The comb may have become frost bitten, and is bleeding. The comb got stuck in wire/fencing/etc and the chicken injured itself trying to get loose. The chicken may have some sort of sickness/disease/etc
chickens have red wattle/comb
The red thing on top of a chicken's head is called a comb. It is the primary way for chickens to expel body heat. All of a human's skin helps us expel body heat but for a chicken it is only the comb and the skin of its face that expel the heat.
The red "skin" on a rooster is called the comb and wattle. The comb is the fatty loose "decoration" on the roosters head and is used for both cooling the rooster when it is hot and for attracting a mate. There are eight distinct varieties of combs on chickens and roosters. These are the varieties recognized by breeders, Buttercup, Cushion, Pea, Rose, Silkis, Single, Strawberry and V-shaped. The wattle is made of the same material, hangs under the neck and does the same job as the comb…it is the area of the chicken where the blood comes closest to the surface of the skin and allows air to cool the blood running through it.
The comb. There are eight distinct varieties of comb for various breeds of chickens and some chickens do not have any comb at all.The thing that hangs under the beak is called a wattle. Both these appendages are used to cool the chicken and to attract a mate.
A cockscomb, cock's-comb, or (less commonly) coxcomb is a fleshy growth, caruncle, or crest on the top of the head of many gallinaceous birds, notably turkeys, pheasants, and domestic chickens. It is generally larger on males than on females. The crest is a prominent feature exhibited by several bird and dinosaur species on their heads.
The "crown" on a chickens head is called a comb. The comb and also the wattle (under the beak) are there for two reasons. First and foremost, the appendages are used like little cooling devises. Chickens do not sweat, the blood circulating in a chicken is cooled in these areas by the ambient outside temperature. The other reason chickens have a comb and wattle is for attracting a mate. A good healthy comb or wattle is a good sign to other chickens that the bird is a potentially good mate.
Both the wattle and comb have two uses. These appendages are used to attract mates and are also used to cool the chickens. Blood circulates close to the surface of both the comb and wattle allowing for release of internal heat. Chickens do not sweat, they pant and heat is released via the cooler air flow over the wattle & comb.
The red skin hanging off their beak is called a wattle. And you probably already know that the top is called a comb. They are used in courtship and other displays of the like. It is also a sign of maturity. Thanks, DavidJr
