In Western culture, the olive branch signifies peace and goodwill.

Where the original connection between the olive branch and peace was made is unknown, but there are references to it both classically and in contemporary symbol.

In Genesis 8:11 of the Hebrew Bible a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak signifies that the great flood is receding. The olive branch has also been associated with Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace.

In contemporary symbols, the olive branch can be found in the right claw of the eagle on the Great Seal of the United States, bearing thirteen olives and leaves. The olive branch can also be found on many flags, notably in the design of the flag of the United Nations.

Peace. More specifically, it is often used in the context of "offering an olive branch," meaning an offer to cease hostilities.
