Town Creek Indian Mound is one of North Carolina's 27 State Historic Sites. Located east of Mt. Gilead in southern Montgomery County, it is the only State Historic Site dedicated to American Indian history. The site represents an example of South Appalachian Mississippian expression on the edge of the Mississippian world. Around 1000 AD new cultural traits began to appear along the banks of the Little River above its confluence with the Town Creek; just upstream of the Pee Dee River. Archaeologist named this cultural tradition Pee Dee due to the close proximityto the great river. The new tradition differed from habits of surrounding groups. These people participated in moud building, far-reaching trade, and agriculture on a large scale to sustain their growing population. Learn more about the site at www.towncreek.nchistoricsites.com
