it is the maximum amount of pressure they want you to put in. in my own opinion i always put the pressure up to the number because tires always lose air after a while. there is all different things people do and different ways people drive. if you drive fast and crazy then i wouldn't put as much in as to an old grandma driving to church and the mini mart every Sunday.
