Many elements were used in the first atomic bombs in the nonnuclear parts. As I cannot possibly list them all (the most common elements were the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen used in the chemical explosives) I will only address the elements used as the nuclear fuel that powered the atomic explosion.

  1. Gadget, plutonium-239 (Trinity site test on July 16, 1945)
  2. Little Boy, uranium-235 (Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 1945)
  3. Fatman, plutonium-239 (Nagasaki bombing on August 8, 1945)
  4. Gilda, plutonium-239 (Operation Crossroads Able test on June 30, 1946)
  5. Helen of Bikini, plutonium-239 (Operation Crossroads Baker test on July 24, 1946)
  6. all 3 Operation Sandstone tests in 1948 used plutonium-239
  7. all 5 Operation Ranger tests in 1951 used plutonium-239
  8. the first 2 Operation Greenhouse tests in 1951 used plutonium-239
  9. the third Operation Greenhouse test in 1951 used plutonium-239 and deuterium (boosted fission)
  10. the fourth Operation Greenhouse test in 1951 used plutonium-239 and tritium (boosted fission)
  11. all 7 Operation Buster-Jangle tests in 1951 used plutonium-239
  12. the 8 Operation Tumbler-Snapper tests in 1952 used various combinations of uranium-235, plutonium-239, and deuterium in different tests
  13. the first Operation Ivy test in 1952 used plutonium-239, deuterium, and tritium (it was the first hydrogen bomb)
  14. the second Operation Ivy test in 1953 used uranium-235 (at about 500 kiloton yield it was the largest pure fission explosion ever)
  15. the 11 Operation Upshot-Knothole tests in 1953 used various combinations of uranium-235, plutonium-239, lithium, and deuterium in different tests (several were "hydrogen bomb mockups" without the fusion fuel to test the principle of radiation implosion)
  16. the 6 Operation Castle tests in 1954 used various combinations of lithium, deuterium, and plutonium-239 (these included the first tests of practical designs for deliverable hydrogen bombs)
  17. etc.
