Hi,
Most HD TV's are the 1080I format, while some may be 1080P. What this means is that in the case of an "I" formatted set, the video information is interlaced. Because of the sizes of the larger screens, the `I' provides a smoother looking appearance. The `P' format means that the video information is progressive and is displayed in much the same manner as that of a computer monitor, and on a larger screen, you may notice more `artifacting' of the image, which can be uncomfortable to view.
Your owner's manual will indicate which format you have, but it's probably safe to assume it's an interlaced format.
Hope this helps,
Cubby
High Definition (HD) is a form of digital television. High Definition is the highest quality of digital television available with the highest resolution, which results in superior picture quality. Listed below are some commonly found digital television resolutions. High Definition is also broadcast in widescreen format, otherwise known as 16:9 aspect ratio. Standard definition is broadcast in 4:3, which is a similar format to analog. Here are some commonly found digital resolutions: • 640x480 pixels (Standard Definition) • 1280x720 pixels (High Definition) • 1920x1080 pixels (High Definition - Often referred to as Full HD or True HD because this is the highest resolution available.)
High definition refers to the quality of the picture, and plasma refers to the type of screen. All plasmas will be high definition, but not all high definition TVs will be plasma.
Upconversion is the technique of resizing a standard definition image to a high definition. A standard definition image is made of 480 or 576 lines (North America is on 480 line and Europe is 576 line). To dsplay that same image in a high definition format, the number of lines needs to be increased to 720 or 1080. A similar process takes place in LCD and plasma televisions. Each television has a native format, 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high, for example. Any signal that is not an identical format needs to be resized to be displayed properly, so an upconversion or down conversion will take place. It is worth pointing out that a standard definition image does not become and HD quality image when it is upconverted. Although the image size is increased, the conversion does not add any detail to the image.
A television that handles 1080i is a high definition model and will therefore support all high definition broadcast formats including 720p. Although 720p is a lower resolution, it is refreshed at twice the rate of 1080i so is classed as another full HD format.
A television capable of displaying 720p is a high definition one and therefore will handle Bluray disks, whether they contain 1080 or 720 format video signals.
An OLED screen is typically used in televisions that use a high definition display. The OLED light is what gives the high definition televisions a clear high definition picture.
HDTV Stands for High Definition Television
BluRay discs carry high definition television and therefore store data in a high density format. A standard definition DVD player will not recognise a BluRay disc and will simply report an error if one is loaded. On the other hand, a BluRay player will not only play BluRay discs but will also handle standard DVDs. Most will also recognise and play CD format discs. Most Bluray players will also down convert the HD signal from a BluRay disc so that it can be viewed on a standard definition television. In this case, of course, the image quality will be the same as any other standard definition signal. To benefit from the high definition signal, an HD television is also required.
DirectTV is a satellite broadcast platform delivering both standard and high definition television. As all high definition televisions will handle both SD and HD content, DirecTV is fully compatible.
DVDs were designed with standard-definition TVs in mind. While they look great on standard-def sets, they're not able to take advantage of the benefits of high-definition TVs. As televisions have become more advanced, DVD's limitations have become more apparent. Blu-ray, on the other hand, is a high-definition disc format designed to maximize the viewing experience available from today's HDTVs. Blu-ray discs and players offer several advantages over the regular DVD format, including improved picture and sound quality.
It stands for High Definition Television.
You can find them at any place where there are DVDs sold. You can fix your high definition with your TV settings if the TV you have is a high definition TV.
