Religious freedom in the United States is defined by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The First Amendment simply states that the government cannot impose any restrictions on the free exercise of religious worship, and cannot elevate any religion to the level of "national religion," a practice which was common throughout much of the world at the time this Amendment was written. The only "restrictions" placed on worship are those which would in some way violate the other "guarantees" of the Constitution or laws of the United States, such as life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. Such restrictions have frequently become the centers of cases brought before courts as civil matters.
This refers mainly to the fact that you should be free to choose your religion; also, to change your religion at any time without being branded an "apostate" or, even worse, to be executed as an apostate, as might happen if you live in Iran.
