The Northern Plains ha been formed by the interplay of three rivers-the Indus, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries. The plain is formed of alluvial soil. The deposition of alluvium in a vast basin lying at the foothills of the Himalaya over millions of years, formed this fertile plain. It is a densely populated physiographic division because of its rich soil cover soil cover combined with adequate water supply which makes it agriculturally a productive part of India.
