The thyroid gland produces hormones which controls your body metabolism. If you don't have these hormones, your body functions will slow down and you will eventually go into a coma and die. So if you don't have a thyroid gland you have to take supplemental thyroid hormones to keep living.

All body systems slow down, how much depends on how poorly the function is. You feel cold, you gain weight, your heart rate slows, you're tired all the time, you get constipated, your skin and hair changes. It really affects every body system. Treatment is easy and effective, replacing the thyroid hormone with a once a day pill, prescribed by a doctor/nurse practitioner. Lab values will have to be checked and dosages may need adjustment.
